F*ck perfect

This is Maan's shot of me. A little artistic, but unmistakable me! | Enigheid

You all know how I love my perfect interior shots. It’s not that I want to paint a perfect picture to the outside world, my heart just sings when I see, style and photograph balanced compositions. Well, this is obviously not that. And with a home that is still a building site (and will stay a building site for many months to come) it will take a while before I can share my usual clean aesthetics again. These pictures made me happy too though. That’s why I choose to post them: to show you some more about our in-between-life and because perfect can be so incredibly boring.

Iedereen die me een tijdje volgt, en let’s face it, alleen de harde kern van bloglezers doet nog de moeite om vanuit een ander platform door te klikken dus ik denk dat jullie me allemaal wel kennen, weet dat ik erg hou van het maken van perfect gestylede interieur foto’s. Niet om aan de buitenwereld een perfect plaatje van ons leven te laten zien, maar omdat mijn hart een sprongetje maakt als ik mooi gebalanceerde composities zie, style en fotografeer. Bloggen hoeft in mijn geval niet meer voor de bühne, maar doe ik echt alleen nog maar omdat ik er blij van word. Deze plaatjes zijn verre van perfect, maar maakten me toch blij. Omdat ons huis een bouwplaats is en dat nog wel even blijft, besloot ik ze hier te delen. Om jullie even een inkijkje te geven in hoe ons leven er nu uit ziet, maar vooral ook omdat altijd maar perfect ook gewoon dodelijk saai is.

Renovating (or ‘meten is weten’)

Here are some pictures of the flooring in our new home. We choose concrete, because we like the fact that it has a smooth but also a rough feel to it. We like the natural look of the concrete pattern. In these pictures it is darker than the end result, because it wasn’t completely dry yet. It’s very nice to have these pictures of a while ago, to keep reminding ourselves of the progress we’ve made the last couple of months.

As you can see, Maan loves the one step stairs, it’s the perfect seat for a toddler. She helps her dad where she can and likes to measuring everything. In Dutch we say ‘meten is weten’ (to measure is to know) and she shouted: 46! 23! 46! 2!

Hier zijn wat foto’s van de vloer in ons nieuwe huis. We kozen voor beton, omdat we een strakke basis wilden, met toch een ruwe en natuurlijke uitstraling. Het natuurlijke patroon dat beton heeft en de onverwachte scheurtjes en plekjes, laten de vloer leven, vinden wij. Deze foto’s zijn van even geleden, hier is de vloer nog niet helemaal droog en daardoor wat donkerder dan nu. Sowieso is de vloer alweer volledig afgedekt, want er wordt nog veel rotzooi gemaakt en we willen hem zoveel mogelijk beschermen. Het is fijn om af en toe terug te kijken op foto’s, want je vergeet zo snel hoeveel hard werk er al niet verzet is.

Zoals je ziet had Maan als snel door dat de enige drempel in het huis, perfect is om even te zitten. Als we op de zondagen samen in het nieuwe huisje zijn, helpt Maan haar vader graag met klussen, onder andere door alles even op te meten. Ze roept dan: 46! 23! 46! 2! Meten is weten natuurlijk.

Every night I fall asleep while thinking about our future home and about all the decorating possibilities. The bedrooms are the first rooms that will be (somewhat) ready to move into. I am not sure though about the colour scheme of the rooms, especially in Maan’s bedroom. I still love all the pink hues in Maan’s former room, chances are that these colours will return.

Vrijwel elke avond val ik in slaap denkend aan ons toekomstige huis en ben ik het in mijn hoofd al helemaal aan het inrichten. De slaapkamers zijn de eerste ruimtes die (voor een groot gedeelte) klaar zullen zijn als we erin trekken. Toch zijn dat juist de ruimtes waar ik qua inrichting nog helemaal niet zeker over ben. Ik zoek naar een balans van uitgesproken stijl en rust. Vooral de kamer van Maan vind ik lastig, omdat ze mijn keuzes nu nog prima vindt, maar ik verwacht dat dat zomaar eens snel kan veranderen. Vooralsnog denk ik dat veel van de warme rozes die ze in haar oude kamer had, terug zullen komen. Hier weer eens een blik in haar oude kamer. De laatste post in deze binnenkijk-serie.

A peek inside our (old) home V

A peek inside our (old) home: the attic. The first floor that was almost ready, but the last part of our home we needed to finish before we sold our house. With Ikea cabinets, vintage chrome lighting and a Tom Dixon Fat Spot | Enigheid

Leaving our beloved home was pretty hard. It was such a big part of our lives and we have made the most precious memories there. I look back at it with a warm heart. That is why I want to show you some of the farewell pictures I took last summer.

This was our attic. It was the first floor that was almost ready. For a few years, it was our living room, dining room and kitchen. When it’s living room duty was over, we sanded and repainted the floor and placed Ikea cabinets with Ringhult doors at the sides. It was the last part of our home we needed to finish before we sold it.

Over the years, we have thoroughly enjoyed the space, the amazing light and the wonderful views over ‘s-Hertogenbosch from that skylight. I hope the new owners are enjoying it just as much.

Afscheid nemen van ons huis was best zwaar. Helemaal omdat we niet meteen over konden naar het nieuwe huis. Ons huis nam zo’n centrale plek in ons leven in, tijdens de verbouwing maar ook daarna, we hebben er prachtige herinneringen gemaakt. Ik kijk erop terug met een warm hart. Daarom wil ik ook graag nog wat foto’s delen van de fotoreportage die ik maakte als afscheid.

Dit was onze zolder. De eerste verdieping die zo goed als af was, vervolgens was het jarenlang onze eet/woon/leefruimte en het was ook de laatste ruimte die we echt nog af moesten maken voor de verkoop. Nadat het niet meer onze woonkamer was, moesten we de vloer schuren en verven om hem weer toonbaar te maken, daarna plaatsten we op zoveel mogelijk plekken Ikea kastjes met Ringhult deuren om veel van onze rotzooi in kwijt te kunnen en de allerlaatste klus was om het op te ruimen. Voor rommelkonten zoals wij was dat ook nog een behoorlijk karwei.

We hebben altijd heel erg genoten van de ruimte, het mooie licht en het uitzicht over ‘s-Hertogenbosch vanuit ons dakraam. Ik hoop dat de nieuwe bewoners er net zo van genieten.

Three!

Maan's birthday in our new home. She is three now, she is such a brave, tough, curious and sweet little girl. We love her so much | Enigheid

Today is Maan’s birthday, she turned three! She was ill with the chicken pox all week so we weren’t sure whether she would be up to a party, but she enjoyed it very much. We invited our close family to our new home and it turned out to be the perfect party location.

I have a three year old kid now, I can hardly imagine. She is brave, tough, funny and curious. And on top of that, she is such a kind soul. We feel so blessed.

Vandaag is Maan jarig, ze is drie! Ze heeft de hele week al last van de waterpokken dus we waren bang dat haar feestje in het water zou vallen (pun intended) maar ze was net op tijd wat opgeknapt en heeft enorm genoten. We nodigden de familie uit in ons nieuwe huis en hoewel het nog niet bewoonbaar is, bleek het de perfecte feestlocatie.

Ik heb ineens een driejarig kind zeg, ongelooflijk. Ze is dapper, sterk, vasthoudend, grappig en nieuwsgierig. En daar bovenop is ze ook nog eens ontzettend lief. Wat een geluk.

It has been a while since I have shared our bathroom. Four years to be exact. I have always enjoyed our bath tub and whirlpool, but since we’ve been able to take baths with Maan it feels even more like a luxury.

A few weeks ago Maan and I received two presents from Moluk via Dam Good Ideas: Oogifant and Boi. These toys are meant to trigger the imagination of kids and that is exactly what they do. Maan likes to play with the penguin (as she calls it) and especially loves the splashes it makes in the water. She thinks the Oogifant is funny too. It caused a bit of a laugh with my friends though. Because of course Maan made me wear it. I wanted to secure it really tight, placed it vacuum on my forehead and wore it for a few minutes. When I took it off, it hurt a little. T. looked at me and said: what is that spot on your head? It resulted in a hickey-like spot that lasted for days. So a disclaimer for every adult that starts playing with it: don’t take it too seriously!

The final picture shows our second bathroom. Opposite to the room where we have the bath tub and the large sink, we have our shower room and toilet. It is a bit harder to take decent pictures of it, but this sneak peek wouldn’t be complete without a glance in our shower room.

Het is een tijd geleden dat ik blogde over onze badkamer(s). Vier jaar om precies te zijn. Ik vond het bad (en de bubbels) altijd al heerlijk, maar sinds we ook kunnen badderen met Maan voelt het helemaal luxe om een bad te hebben.

Een paar weken geleden kregen Maan en ik twee cadeautjes van Moluk via Dam Good Ideas: een Oogifant en een Boi. Dit speelgoed is bedoeld om de verbeelding te prikkelen en dat is precies wat er gebeurt. Maan vindt het leuk om in bad te spelen met de pinguïn (zoals zij hem noemt) en vindt dan vooral het harde spetteren lollig als hij in het water duikelt. De Oogifant vindt ze ook heel grappig, maar was vooral voer voor een flink lachsalvo van mijn vriendinnen. Jullie snappen dat Maan me dwong om hem op mijn hoofd te doen. En uiteraard deed ik dat ook. Sterker nog, ik deed heel erg mijn best om hem zo strak als mogelijk op mijn hoofd te zetten en zorgde dat hij goed vacuüm gezogen zat. Het deed een beetje pijn toen ik hem eraf haalde. En vervolgens zei T. ‘wat een gekke vlek op je hoofd’. Het bleek een soort zuigzoen, die dagenlang mijn voorhoofd sierde. Bij deze een disclaimer voor alle volwassenen die het ding in handen krijgen: neem je olifanten-rol niet te serieus.

Op de laatste foto zie je onze tweede badkamer. Hij is wat minder fotogeniek dan de ruimte met bad en grote wastafel, omdat hij op een donkere plek zit en je frontaal kijkt op het toilet. Maar ik wilde hem toch laten zien, de sneak peek zou niet compleet zijn zonder een blik op de regendouche.

Apparently, it takes wanting to sell a house to finish all the details. These sliding doors for example: we found them online years ago, garden doors from the 1920s, bought pieces of vintage looking glass to fit in them and then… had other priorities. A few weeks ago the day finally came that we’ve placed them between the front part of the living room and the dining part. It feels so good to dot the i’s on our amazing project. On to the next one!

Blijkbaar is de verkoop van je huis nodig als laatste zetje om je huis echt helemaal af te maken. Deze ensuite deuren vonden we jaren geleden via marktplaats, het zijn tuindeuren uit de jaren ’20. Volgens mij hebben we ze zelfs al in huis sinds het eerste jaar van de verbouwing. We kochten ook al vrij snel speciaal glas met een vintage uitstraling. En daarna… hadden we andere prioriteiten. Een paar weken geleden – nét voordat de funda-foto’s gemaakt werden – was het eindelijk zover en hingen we ze tussen de voorkamer en het eetgedeelte van de woonkamer. Ondanks dat we er een beetje spijt van hadden dat we ze niet eerder opknapten, voelt het heel goed om de laatste puntjes op de i te zetten van dit voor ons zo bijzondere renovatieproject. Op naar een nieuwe uitdaging!

Maan & Schurk

A few weeks ago I blogged about our new Vans-shoes. After taking the pictures of the two of us, Maan asked whether she could give Schurk some treats. The two of them are so cute and these pictures are so dear to me. Maan loves our cats to death. Schurk enjoys her company too, luckily.

Schurk is pretty old, turning 16 this year. Since a couple of weeks she isn’t feeling well and we went to to the veterinarian last week. It was quite a challenge because she needed a blood test, but she was dehydrated which made drawing blood nearly impossible. The poor thing was so stressed out and came home shivering. Maan felt so sorry for her, she tried to comfort her with treats, petted her the entire evening and was talking to her constantly. She was so mad when we took her to bed to give Schurk some well deserved rest.

For now, we have to be patient and wait for the results of the test. Hoping for the best.

Een paar weken geleden blogde ik over onze nieuwe Vans-sneakers. Toen de foto’s van Maan en mij genomen waren, vroeg Maan of ze Schurk wat snoepjes mocht geven. Ik vind ze zo schattig samen, deze foto’s warmen mijn hart. Maan is echt gek op onze katten en Schurk geniet gelukkig ook heel erg van de aandacht van Maan.

Ze is al een oud beestje, bijna 16. De afgelopen weken was ze niet fit en vorige week gingen we naar de dierenarts. Het was heel sneu want de dierenarts wilde bloed afnemen, maar ze bleek uitgedroogd waardoor het bloed tappen bijna onmogelijk was. De arme kat was zo gestrest, ik dacht dat ze erin zou blijven. Maan vond het zo zielig dat ze bij thuiskomst wilde troosten, door allerlei eten aan te bieden (waar Schurk uiteraard geen zin in had) en maar bleef aaien, terwijl ze lieve woordjes toefluisterde. Ze werd heel boos toen we haar naar bed brachten om Schurk de nodige rust te geven.

Voor nu is het even afwachten op de uitslag. We hopen er het beste van, we kunnen haar niet missen.
