Kitchen

Progress in our American Kitchen! It is starting to look like I’ve been imagining for a while now. Of course we had some setbacks (the kitchen counter needs quite some work still and a few of the cabinets need a new paint job) but we are a few steps closer to an amazing kitchen.

Vooruitgang in onze American Kitchen! Het begint te lijken op de keuken die ik al die tijd in mijn hoofd had. Natuurlijk hebben we wat tegenslagen (er gaat nog veel werk zitten in de afwerking van het keukenblad en een aantal deurtjes moeten opnieuw geschilderd worden) maar we zijn weer een paar stappen dichterbij onze droomkeuken.

The table

This is the result of all the painting: the table that belonged to T’s grandma has a few extra coats of paint. Our ‘temporary’ living room at the attic isn’t that big, so we’ll probably leave the middle part folded up most of the time. Or I’ll fold it out, just to look at the colours (inspired by the amazing Weekday Carnival).

The flowers and the Hay kaleido tray were a gift from sweet Wendel.

Dit is het resultaat van al het verven: de tafel die van T’s oma was, heeft een paar extra lagen verf. Onze ‘tijdelijke’ woonkamer op zolder is niet heel groot, dus we laten de tafel vast vaak ingeklapt. Of ik klap hem uit om gewoon te genieten van de kleuren (geïnspireerd door de geweldige Weekday Carnival).

De bloemen en Hay kaleido bakje waren een kado van lieve Wendel.

Keukenwerk

Weer een stap verder in onze American Kitchen keuken: de muren zijn geverfd, de kastjes staan en de lamp (Louis Poulsen PH 5, gekocht in Kopenhagen een tijd geleden) hangt. Voor we er kunnen koken moet er nog een hoop gebeuren (de bovenkastjes moeten worden opgeknapt, het aanrechtblad is nog niet klaar, er moet een extra kast worden gemaakt, de deurtjes moeten naar de spuiter en er komt een gietvloer in), maar wat word ik hier al blij van!

The next phase in renovating our American Kitchen: the walls are painted, the cabinets are in place and the lamp (Louis Poulsen PH 5, bought in Copenhagen a while ago) is hanging on the ceiling. The kitchen is not nearly finished yet (the upper cabinets need renovating, the kitchen counter isn’t ready yet, we’ve got to make an extra cabinet, the doors need to go to the spray painter and the floor needs a top layer), but oh my, this gets me excited already!

Buiten

Vandaag zat ik in ons stadstuintje, met een boek in de zon. Op een klapstoeltje, want ik moest de tuinset van opa nog bijtippen met verf, tegen de roest. Dat laatste bleek de ideale klus voor vanmiddag. Nu nog een paar kussens…

Today I sat in our small city garden, reading a book in the sun. I sat on a folding chair, because I hadn’t put some extra varnish on grandpa’s garden set yet, and it started to rust. And that painting was the perfect task for this afternoon. Now all I have to do is make some cushions…

Enig rek

Een paar weken geleden vond ik een paar kerstballen in een uitverkoop-bak. Ik vond de kleur niet mooi, dus ik spoot ze in mijn lievelingskleuren. Vorig jaar had ik voor het eerst geen kerstboom, maar hing ik mijn ballen in een rek. Ik vond zelfs een platte kerststal die er perfect bij past. Handig. En daarom haalde ik het rek dit jaar weer tevoorschijn: tadaaa!

A few weeks ago I found some diamond shaped christmas ornaments on sale. I didn’t like their colour, so I spray painted them in my favorite colours. Last year I didn’t have a Christmas tree for the first time, but I hung the ornaments on a rack. I even found a flat nativity scene that fits in perfectly. Neat. And that’s why I brought out the rack again: here it is!

Men neme: een oude lijst, een witte spuitbus en een prachtige rainbow penguin print van Rock that horse. Nieuwe kunst aan de muur! Ik moet nu wel wat puzzelen aan de compositie op de muur, ik heb de goede balans nog niet gevonden.
Take: an old frame, white spray paint and a beautiful rainbow penguin print by Rock that horse. New art on the wall! It does mean I have to think about the composition on the wall, I haven’t found the right balance yet.

>Gelukt

Een heel aantal maanden geleden begon ik enthousiast aan een klein project: ik had een vaas die ik mintgroen wilde hebben. De eerste pogingen faalden gigantisch. De vaas eindigde diep weggestopt in een kast. Pas geleden durfde ik weer. En het is gelukt!

Several months ago, enthusiastically I started a small new project: I had a vase I wanted to paint in a pastel green color. The first attempts failed miserably. The vase ended up locked up in a cubboard. Recently I had some courage. And it worked out really good!

>Lamp-metamorfose

Dit was de oude bruine lamp, die jarenlang op T.’s kamer heeft gestaan en ook een hele tijd in ons eerste huis. Ik was hem beu, maar de vorm beviel me wel.

This was the old brown lamp, that T. has had on his bedroom for years and we’ve had it in our first house for quite a while too. I was tired of it, but liked the shape.

En zo is ‘ie uitgepakt! Na een hoop gezwoeg en gezweet, dat wel. Met een neonroze en een mintgroene binnenkant, de perfecte combinatie als je het mij vraagt.
And this is how it turned out! After a lot of sweat and tears, I have to admit. With a neonpink and pale green on the inside, the perfect combination if you’d ask me.
